Microsoft fined record $1.35 billion in EU

microsoft-logo.pngThis was the biggest fine ever imposed on a company. This is a penalty for defied a 2004 order from Brussels to provide the information on reasonable terms. The Commission said in a landmark 2004 ruling, that Microsoft had withheld needed interoperability information for “work group server” software. Even after the 2004 decision and a 497-million euro fine Microsoft is giving incomplete documentation and charging high royalties.

Ulysses mission coming to end

Mission to sunUlysses,a joint mission between ESA and NASA to study the environment of space above and below the poles of the Sun coming to an end. Ulysses has been in the space for 17 years which is more than four times its expected lifetime. The power to the spacecraft supplied from a radioactive isotope, has been steadily dropping. Now the spacecraft no longer has enough power to run all of its communications, heating and scientific equipment simultaneously.

Saturn is closer.

SaturnThe Saturn’s best appearance in 2008 happens now. Saturn reached a point in its orbit called opposition on February 24. At this position, the planet lies opposite the Sun from our perspective on Earth. This marks the best time of year to view the ringed planet because it lies closest to Earth and thus appears its biggest and brightest. At this time Saturn lies 1.24 billion kilometers from Earth.

How to memorize 11 Planets

“My very exciting magic carpet just sailed under nine palace elephants.”

The 11 recognized planets are Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Ceres, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, Pluto and Eris. Ceres, Pluto and Eris are considered dwarf planets.

National Geographic Children’s Books created the contest in response to the recent announcement about the planets.

Oldest Oill painting discovered

Oil PaintingA team of Japanese, European and U.S. scientists found the oldest known oil painting, dating from 650 A.D. The discovery was made in Afghanistan’s Bamiyan Valley. Bamiyan valley is famous for its 1,500-year-old massive Buddha statues which were destroyed by Taliban in 2001. The discovery reverses a common perception that the oil painting, originated in Europe.

YahooA lawsuit has been filed against Yahoo for rejecting Microsoft’s $44.6 billion buyout offer. According to the lawsuit, Yahoo has “failed” in their duties to shareholders by rejecting the offer, putting the investments of everyone in the company at risk. Two Detroit pension funds sue the company.

YouTube banned in Pakistan.

You TubePakistan has blocked access to the popular YouTube website because of content deemed offensive to Islam. Danish cartoons depicting the Prophet Muhammad which outraged many is featured in Youtube. The website would remain blocked till further orders. Other countries that have temporarily blocked access to YouTube include Turkey and Thailand. Thailand lifted the band later after the video which insulting King had been removed from the site.
