A new study revealed that 95 percent of native people throughout the Americas can trace part of their ancestry to just six women. The “founding mothers” are believed to have lived between 18,000 and 21,000 years ago.

This is an exciting new study, but because the populations used were so small, its conclusions are still tentative. However, it does seem to work with the emerging archaeological data as well.
