Japanese Mobile System reaches 250M bps

Mobile BroadbandIn trials of a future 3G cellular technology, a download speed of 250M bps (bits per second) has been achieved by NTT DoComo, Japan’s biggest mobile service provider. The speed was attained in outdoor tests near the carrier’s research and development laboratory in Yokosuka, Japan. The new system is named “Super 3G” and expected to be launched commercially in the next decade. DoCoMo’s network in Japan currently offers download speeds up to 3.6M bps.

Hyperactive girls lands in problems

Hyperactive girlA joint study by researchers from Université de Montréal and the University College London revealed that young girls who are hyperactive are more likely to get hooked on smoking, under-perform in school or jobs and gravitate towards mentally abusive relationships as adults. The study followed 881 Canadian girls from the ages of six to 21 years. The research was published in the latest issue of the Archives of General Psychiatry.

Cellphone Use = Get Drunk

DrivingA study by Carnegie-Mellon University researchers shows that mobile phone use while driving reduces 37 percent of brain activity engaged in driving. This level of distraction could be as dangerous as being under the influence of alcohol. The findings also suggest that using a hands-free headset doesn’t make much of a difference.

Dell facing laptop bettery shortage

Dell inspiron batteryDell Inc said the personal-computer industry was experiencing a shortage of laptop batteries caused partly by the March 3 fire at LG Chem’s Ochang plant. LG Chem is the second biggest South Korean battery maker. The fire contributed to a worldwide battery shortage. Dell is the world’s second-largest PC maker after Hewlett-Packard Co.

Bread Crisis

EgyptAcute shortages of subsidized bread, which is sold at less than one U.S. cent a loaf, have caused hours-long lines and violence at some sites in poor neighborhoods in Egypt. Unsubsidized bread sells 10 to 12 times the subsidized price. According to police, at least seven people have died in the clashes. Egypt has a population of 80 million with 71% literacy rate.

Bulgaria to bid for 2018 Winter Olympics

Sofia was kicked out of the race for hosting the 2014 Winter Olympic Games in June 2006 after the International Olympic Committee short listed three of the candidates and eventually picked the Russian Black Sea resort of Sochi.

Japan can cut emissions by 11%

EmissionsA study by Japan’s trade ministry says that the nation can cut greenhouse gas emissions by 11 percent by 2020 below 2005 levels. EU plans to cut greenhouse gas emissions by a fifth by 2020 compared to 1990 levels.

3D Camera with 12,616 lenses

CubeThe new 3D camera being developed by Stanford electronics will capable of taking photographs with electronically stored depth map of the picture. That is, a photograph of a person’s face would, include the precise distances to the subject’s eyes, nose, ears, chin, etc. One obvious potential use of the technology: facial recognition for security purposes. The technology behind the camera is called “multi-aperture image sensor” which is made by shrunk the pixels on the sensor several times smaller than pixels in standard digital cameras and grouping the pixels in arrays of 256 pixels each, and placing tiny lens atop each array.

A large resort in Jamaica also has been closed after an outbreak there.The illness is not considered dangerous to the general public.

Squirrels Network without Facebook

SquirrelA new study on a colony of 65 ground squirrels revealed that Squirrels are connected, on average, by three degrees of separation, meaning any two squirrels could be connected by three intermediate animals. Most of the connections were between mating squirrels and their families. But friendship, too, exists in the squirrel world. The study was conducted by Theodore Manno, a biologist at Auburn University in Alabama. It is notable that Human social network is separated by six degrees.

Association between green vegetables & healthy sperm

vegetables.pngLevels of folate in men’s diets is linked to chromosomal abnormalities in their sperm. Men who consumed high levels of Folate (water-soluble B vitamin that found in leafy green vegetables and fruit) and folic acid tended to have lower levels of abnormal sperm where a chromosome had been lost or gained. This abnormality is known as aneuploidy. The research is published on the European leading reproductive medicine journal, Human Reproduction.
