Since lungs are a highly sensitive organ that delivers oxygen molecules through a thin membrane directly to the blood, researchers are concerned about astronauts’ health. Long term exposure to lunar dust will increase the dust particles go deeper into the lungs, and this could be lethal.
But researchers are unsure about the consequences, so they have designed lunar bases to get more information on particle size, gravity and deposition rate. This could benefits for healthcare on Earth, such as improved delivery of aerosol medications to the lungs.
