The Santa Cruz Mountains abutt the Monterey Bay. The fire is located between Routes 17 (across the SC Mntns into San Jose) and Route 101. The fire is threatening homes, ranches and businesses heading AWAY from Route 17 towards the ranch and farm town of Corralitos. Most of the residents being evacuated have lived in the mountains for years and have livestock and horses. This is a VERY dangerous fire, totally out-of-control due to winds gusting to 40 mph across the ridgelines and through the canyons. There are few exit roads, which have all been closed now. The comment by CNN anchors regarding multi-million dollar homes being threatened–insuating “city folks” buy acreage and then build big huge homes–is false. These are hard working folks who stand to lose everything. Please be advised that Santa Cruz and Santa Clara Counties median house price is approximately $525K to $710K—and that’s for a 2/3 bdrm, 1 bath, 40-50 yr old house. The fact that a few folks have been fortunate to build or retire in the Santa Cruz Mntns with nice new homes should not overshadow the fact that this close knit mountain/valley community contains hard working, ranchers and farmers who have lived in the area for decades–are not rich and are suffering.
