France will walk away from this week’s G20 summit if its demands for stricter financial regulation are not met. Strengthening financial regulation will be one of the key issues at the G20. France is demanding a global financial market regulator to avoid what a French official on Monday called the “catastrophe” of competing regulation systems, under which the most lax system wins. The official declined to be named in line with official protocol. European countries are emphasizing a toughened regulatory system for global finance while the U.S. administration has urged more spending.

A former religious cult member pleaded guilty Monday to starving her 1-year-old son to death. The US and Japan yesterday deployed anti-missile batteries on land and sea to shoot down possible debris from an intercontinental ballistic missile North Korea is expected to test in the next few days. Pakistani troops and paramilitaries overpowered a group of militants who took over the police training academy in Lahore and killed at least 20 people during a seven-hour siege today. Pakistani officials say it is too early to say who is responsible for Monday’s assault in Lahore. The Lahore academy has been named by local media as the Manawan police training school. Italy recently announced a 200 million euro eco-friendly project to harvest the prolific seaweed that lines Venice’s canals and transform it into emissions-free energy. The idea is to set up a power plant fuelled by algae, the first facility of its kind in Italy. The plant, to be built in collaboration with renewable energy services company Enalg, will be operative in two years and will produce 40 megawatts of electricity, equivalent to half of the energy required by the entire city centre of Venice. Canadian researchers have uncovered a vast electronic spying operation that infiltrated computers and stole documents from government and private offices around the world, including those of the Dalai Lama. Barack Obama has unveiled his administration’s new strategy in Afghanistan, including the deployment of an additional 4,000 US troops to train Afghan forces, following a review of policy on Afghanistan and Pakistan. Engineering firm Paragon Space Development plans to build a greenhouse to fly to the moon. The greenhouse will be used to incubate fast-growing mustard seeds on the lunar surface, in the hopes of producing flowering plants. The prototype unveiled on Friday is a metal-reinforced glass dome that is some 9 centimetres in diameter and 30 centimetres high, enough space to grow roughly six plants.
