Visits to Gmail surpass YouTube

For the past two weeks, the market share of US Internet visits to Gmail has been higher than visits to YouTube, according to Hitwise. Previously, YouTube consistently ranked 10th among all websites by market share of visits until the week ending Jan. 10, 2009, where Gmail moved up one rank to reach #10. Google launched Gmail on April 1, 2004 as an invitation-only beta release and it became available to the general public on February 7, 2007. Gmail’s spam filtering features a community-driven system: when any user marks an email as spam, this provides information to help the system identify similar future messages for all Gmail users.
