Swearing ‘can actually lessen pain’

swearingThe study, conducted by researchers at Keele University in Staffordshire, suggests that swearing may be a good recipe for coping with physical knocks. The research team, led by Dr Richard Stephens, wondered whether swearing might have a psychological effect that increased pain tolerance. To test the theory, they asked 66 volunteer students to submerge a hand into a tube of iced water for as long as possible while repeating a swear word of their choice. Muslim prisoners get their own cells after sharing row

IslamA prison has agreed to give Muslims their own cells after they complained about sharing with other inmates. They were said to be unhappy at praying and eating near non-Muslims at Birmingham‚Äôs Winson Green jail. It is thought to be the first time inmates have been segregated by religion. Prison bosses have decided to place them with other Muslims, or give them single cells when space is available. There has also been concern among the 200-strong Muslim contingent in Winson Green about the halal meat served there. Having High Purpose In Life Reduces Risk Of Death

Possessing a greater purpose in life is associated with lower mortality rates among older adults according to a new study by researchers at Rush University Medical Center. After adjusting for age, sex, education and race, a higher purpose of life was associated with a substantially reduced risk of mortality. Jehovah’s Witnesses More Likely to Die in Childbirth, Study Finds

fetusPregnant women who are Jehovah’s Witnesses are six times more likely to die during childbirth and three times more likely to have serious complications than the general population, according to a new study by Dutch researchers. Gossiping may be just what the doctor ordered because it increases progesterone, a hormone that reduces anxiety and stress and makes women happier, according to an article in the London Daily Mail. The new research, at the University of Michigan, paired up 160 female students. A study published in the medical journal BMC Family Practice said that despite better access to information many people did not know where the major organs were found. Only a third were able to pinpoint the lungs, and the 722 people questioned only got half the answers right on average. Women are achieving better grades at university, study finds

womenWomen are outperforming men at university according to research by the Higher Education Policy Institute (HEPI). The study shows that female students of all ages and social and ethnic groups now outstrip male undergraduates in almost every subject including law and medicine. Dr Anthony Richardson and his colleagues from CSIRO Marine and Atmospheric Research says jellyfish numbers are increasing, particularly in South East Asia, the Black Sea, the Gulf of Mexico and the North Sea. Medical Bills Are Found Linked to Most Bankruptcies

Most people hit by such bankruptcies were considered middle-class, college-educated and owned homes, according to the study published online by the American Journal of Medicine.
