Is Aging an Accident of Evolution?

genePrevailing theory of aging challenged by Stanford University Medical School researchers. Their discovery contradicts the prevailing theory that aging is a buildup of tissue damage similar to rust. The Stanford findings suggest specific genetic instructions drive the process. If they are right, science might one day find ways of switching the signals off and halting or even reversing aging. Full Story : DailyGalaxy.com….

Russia’s Dark Horse Plan to Get to Mars

mars-phobosInstead of aiming straight for Mars, the Russians are going after Phobos, the larger of its two little satellites and one of the oddest objects around. Their probe, called Fobos-Grunt (“Phobos soil” in Russian), will not only land on Phobos but also scoop up some samples of the surface and send them to Earth. Phobos is very different from our moon. It is a potato-shaped rock measuring only 12 miles by 17 miles, nearly as dark as coal, and dominated by a six-mile-wide crater called Stickney. Full Story : DiscoverMagazine.com….

NASA Rover Sees Variable Environmental History at Martian Crater

Planet MarsOne of NASA’s two Mars rovers has recorded a compelling saga of environmental changes that occurred over billions of years at a Martian crater. The Mars rover, Opportunity, surveyed the rim and interior of Victoria Crater on the Red Planet from September 2006 through August 2008. The rover revealed the effects of wind and water. The data show water repeatedly came and left billions of years ago. Wind persisted much longer, heaping sand into dunes between ancient water episodes. Full Story : NASA.gov…..

Space Station Crew Drinks Recycled Urine

space-stationAfter the astronauts on the International Space Station finished up their communications with Space Shuttle Atlantis yesterday, the crew on the Space Station did something that no other astronaut has ever done before - drank recycled urine and sweat. The previous shuttle crew that recently returned to Earth brought back samples of the recycled water to make sure it was safe to drink, and all tests came back fine. Full Story : TechFragments.com….

Study says Beautiful people earn more Money

actress-face-beautyGood-looking men and women have a greater confidence that gives them an edge in the job market, a study from the University of Florida showed. “We’ve found that, even accounting for intelligence, a person’s feeling of self-worth is enhanced by how attractive they are and this, in turn, results in higher pay,” Timothy Judge, the study’s lead author said. Can happiness be inherited?

geneDr. Halabe Bucay suggests that a wide range of chemicals that our brain generates when we are in different moods could affect ‘germ cells’ (eggs and sperm), the cells that ultimately produce the next generation. Such natural chemicals could affect the way that specific genes are expressed in the germ cells, and hence how a child develops. Brain chemicals such as endorphins, and drugs, such as marijuana and heroin are known to have significant effects on sperm and eggs. Full Story : Physorg.com…..

Teenagers Are Becoming Increasingly Logical

teenagersA research project at the University of Gothenburg has been testing large groups of 13-year-olds in Sweden since the early 1960s using the same intelligence test. The tests have taken place at approximately five year intervals and consist of an inductive-logic test, a verbal test and a spatial test. The most recent study, shows that today’s teenagers are achieving demonstrably better results in the logic test than was the case fifty years ago. Teenagers’ spatial capacity, the so-called power of spatial imagination, is higher now than it was in the 1960s. Full Story : ScienceDaily.com….

Constant sunlight linked to summer suicide spike

sunlightSuicide rates in Greenland increase during the summer, peaking in June. The researchers found that most suicides occurred in young men and that violent methods, such as shooting, hanging and jumping, accounted for 95% of all suicides. The authors speculate that light-generated imbalances in turnover of the neurotransmitter serotonin may lead to increased impulsiveness that, in combination with lack of sleep, may explain the increased suicide rates in the summer. New research study reveals origin of volcano’s carbon-based lavas

volcanoScientists studying the world’s most unusual volcano have discovered the reason behind its unique carbon-based lavas. The new geochemical analyzes reveals that an extremely small degree of partial melting of typical minerals in the earth’s upper mantle is the source of the rare carbon-derived lava erupting from Tanzania’s Oldoinyo Lengai volcano. SKorean experts claim to have cloned glowing dogs

dog South Korean scientists say they have engineered four beagles that glow red using cloning techniques that could help develop cures for human diseases. The four dogs, all named “Ruppy” - a combination of the words “ruby” and “puppy” - look like typical beagles by daylight. But they glow red under ultraviolet light, and the dogs’ nails and abdomens, which have thin skins, look red even to the naked eye. Full Story : Physorg.com……

First Gardens on the Moon by 2012!

moon-plantGroundbreaking advancements in the realm of space engineering may soon see the moon sown with the first gardens to grow on the lunar surface. As part of the Google Lunar X Prize, Paragon Space Development Corporation has recently teamed with Odyssey Moon to develop a pressurized mini greenhouse to deploy on the surface of the moon, grow a plant from seed, and hopefully see it flower and seed itself. It’s a complicated endeavor, but it marks a critical stage of development for extending life beyond the confines of our planet. Full Story : Inhabitat.com……

Star crust is 10 billion times stronger than steel

neutron-starThe crust of neutron stars is 10 billion times stronger than steel, according to new simulations. That makes the surface of these ultra-dense stars tough enough to support long-lived bulges that could produce gravitational waves detectable by experiments on Earth. Neutron stars are the cores left behind when relatively massive stars explode in supernovae.  Full Story : Newscientist………
