Female Domination

monkeyfightMale domination is common among primates including monkeys. But when the number of males increases, females become more strong and dominant. According to researchers, this new finding could true with humans. Male primates are usually larger than females, and it is easier for them to be stronger. But there are times where females dominate, for instance lemurs in Madagascar and macaques.

Findings support that these females are not larger than males, but they dominate due to odds. Chances of wining a fight by a female increases when male aggression is more intense and more males are defeated by other males. Therefore high-ranking females may be victorious over these losers. When females win a fight by chance, they grow more confident and win more fights, and eventually they dominate.

How War Affects Children

BabyWar tears the childhood happiness apart. According to the United Nations, children in 50 countries are currently growing up in the midst of war. When researchers asked few moral questions to these children, there was a whole new moral outlook found. When researchers questioned these children about the morality of stealing or harming someone. Although they grew up in an environment filled with homicide, theft and physical violence on daily basis, surprisingly, these children all said that stealing and harming others was wrong, morally wrong, even if everybody did it. But the children had a whole different view of right and wrong within the context of revenge. They will harm someone when it comes to revenge.

Fights, terrorism and all-out conflict are based in real or imagined scenarios where each side see themselves as victims. These children justified the reason for revenge. You have harmed me or those I love, so I can righteously harm you and yours which is a social context of tit-for-tat. These children are dragged into the complex network of revenge justice.

Grandmas Can Have Babies

testtubebabyWhen scientists predicted a scenario just like test-tube babies 30 years ago, it shocked us, but now it is an acceptable routine to most people. According to the journal Nature “Making Babies: The Next 30 Years”, newborns and 100-year-old  can have children; labs will generate sperm and eggs for anybody; human embryos will be easily made by pluripotent stem cell; “Genetic cassettes” will be inserted to correct any genetic diseases or mutation; and In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) will become as cheap as $100.

But don’t you thing the old-fashioned way is cheaper and more fun?

Can Snakes Smell?

Can Snakes Smell? Most snakes have poor eye sight and limited hearing, but have an excellent sense of smell.  It doesn’t have a conventional nose, but they sniff with an organ at the roof of the mouth. This organ is called a Jacobson’s organ, which is found in a few lizard species. Snakes flick their tongues and collect scent particles for Jacobson’s organ. They stuck their forked tongue into a pair of holes in the Jacobson’s organ to support the sense of smell.

A study done on 12,200 couples proved that the chance of a successful pregnancy falls when the man is over 35, and it is significantly lower if he is over 40. The researchers told in a health conference that it was due to the DNA damage in sperm.

Genome Changes With Age

genome.jpgHuman genomes can change throughout a person’s lifespan. It’s influenced by environmental or nutritional factors. This change may explain the reasons for different deadly illnesses such as cancer which comes with age. Researchers at Johns Hopkins University found epigenetic marks on a DNA sequence which modify over the course of one’s life. The extent of such changes is similar among family members. The changes in the genomic structure can occur as a result of dietary and other environmental exposure. Epigenetics may play a role in diseases like diabetes, autism and cancer.

Identity Crisis Faced By The Facebook Generation

FacebookAccording to a warning given to the Annual Meeting of the Royal College of Psychiatrists, this generation who use internet for everything and who have never known a world unless they  surf on-line  are  growing up with a dangerous view of the world and their own identity. They are going through major identity crisis. People who born after 1990 have grown up in a world dominated by online social networks such as Facebook and MySpace. Many of these youngsters use Internet as the main medium to communicate. Their relationships are quickly disposed at the click of a mouse.  Because of the online social networking, people find the real world boring and unstimulating. Because of this online mess, youngsters are going through the stages of vulnerable to impulsive to suicide.

Chat room communication reduced sensory experience; person’s expression/body language/ voice/tone aren’t there; and this can shape one’s perceptions of the interaction differently. Online session  changes the perception to a dream-like state, and this unnatural blending of mind with the other person leads to entirely different meaning to friendships and relationships.

Secret Sex Lives of Female Chimps

chimpsFemale chimpanzees desire to have sex with as many males as possible. They keep their mouths shut about it, to increases their chances of luring the top chimps. Scientists at the University of St Andrews explored what the copulation calls of female chimpanzees mean. They have concluded that female chimps sometimes keep quiet during sex to prevent other females from intruding, so other female rivals don’t know what they’ve been up to.

Female Chimps produce more copulation calls when high-ranking males were around to attract them. By having sex with more males causes confusion among the male chimpanzees as to which one sired the offspring. Therefore, the males are less likely to kill any babies that might be theirs.

Do You Want To Get Better Golf Scores?

golfNew study proved that better golfers are more likely to see the golf hole as larger than other people. When they play well  the hole looks as big as a bucket or basketball hoop, and when they do not play well they view hole looks like a dime.

When players look at the hole, the hole is going to be the center of their vision where there are more photoreceptors, and this means players are more likely to see it clearly, which will  help them putt better.

Fish’s Ears

fishAlthough we don’t see ears of fishes, they do have ear parts inside their heads. According to the National Wildlife Federation, fishes can pick up sounds in the water through their bodies and in the ear.
They also can sense movement in the water with the lateral lines. Interestingly, sharks have the ability to sense electricity, and genes that contribute to this sense is responsible for the head and facial features in humans. Therefore sharks and humans come down to a common ancestor back in time. Our ears evolved from fish gills.

Multiple Personality When You Speak Different Language

bicultureAccording to a research study published in the in the Journal of Consumer Research, people who are bi-cultural and speak two different languages can shift their personalities when they switch one language to another. In the study researchers  found significant changes in one’s self perception called “frame-shifting”  in bi-cultural participants who speak Spanish and English. Bi-cultural people switch frames more quickly and easily than those who are bilingual monoculturals. In the research women who came from Spanish background  perceived themselves as more assertive when they spoke Spanish than when they spoke English.

In one of the studies,  participants saw the ads in one language and in six months later, they saw the same ads in the other language. The participants  saw an ad’s main character as a risk-taking, independent woman in the Spanish version and  hopeless, lonely, confused woman in the English version.
