Study blames alcohol for half 1990s Russian deaths

A new study by an international team of public health researchers documents the devastating impact of alcohol abuse on Russia — showing that drinking caused more than half of deaths among Russians aged 15 to 54 in the turbulent era following the Soviet collapse. The 52 percent figure compares to estimates that less than 4 percent of deaths worldwide are caused by alcohol abuse, according to the study by Russian, British and French researchers published in Friday’s edition of the British medical journal The Lancet. Australian drinks most alcohol in the world

AUSTRALIANS are now the world’s undisputed beer-swilling kings - with even the Irish failing to keep the pace of our outback booze hounds. A report has shown Northern Territorians drink 15 litres of pure alcohol each year - three times the global average. Study after study suggests that alcohol in moderation may promote heart health and even ward off diabetes and dementia. The evidence is so plentiful that some experts consider moderate drinking — about one drink a day for women, about two for men — a central component of a healthy lifestyle. For some scientists, the question will not go away. No study, these critics say, has ever proved a causal relationship between moderate drinking and lower risk of death — only that the two often go together. Get a Good Night Sleep

Here are few tips for good night sleep and sleep hygiene :

• Go to bed at the same time everyday.
• Set aside enough time to get the 7 hours of sleep.
• Aviod caffeine, heavy and spicy foods, and alcohol 4-6 hours before hitting the bed.
• Block any distracting lights and noises, computers or any other blinking devices.
• Only engage in sleep and sex in bed; don’t watch TV, or read or eat.
• Exercise regularly but not before bed-time.

Reason For Teenage Obesity

Dr. Catherine Berkey and colleagues from Harvard Medical School,  Growing Up Today Study (GUTS), surveyed more than 5000 girls, 14 - 21 years from all 50 states, and  their weekly habits were recorded. The researchers found that more Internet time, more alcohol consumption, and less sleep resulted in extra weight gain. Girls who consumed 2 or more alcoholic beverages a week or slept less than 6 hours at night gained more weight.  Girls who use Internet in addition to alcohol and sleep gain 4 extra pounds a year. Researchers are encouraging adolescent girls to replace recreational Internet time with more sleep, and avoid alcoholic beverage consumption to lose their weight.

When it comes to a stressful situation, women and men act differently. Women have greater rates of depression and anxiety disorders while men have greater rates of alcohol-use disorders.

According to a new study, men tend to consume alcohol when they are stressed or upset. Women feel sad or anxious, which lead to depression and anxiety, and they also tend to think over and over again about their negative emotional state. But men are more likely to distract themselves from negative emotions, and try not to think about these emotions. This can lead to alcohol related disorders.

Consumption Of Alcohol In the Young Ages Lead To Heavy Drinking

Since it is unethical and impossible for the scientists to do the alcohol consumption study with teenagers, Scientists at Duke University Medical Center performed a longterm experiment on rats based on the fact that mammals’ genome similar to that of humans.

They have proved that people who start to drink alcohol in their early ages developed to be a heavy drinkers in their adulthood.

Japan gives visually impaired people an extra consideration by putting braille labels on beer cans. Japanese brewers stamp patterns of raised dots on top of their beer cans in Braille, the dots read “alcohol”.
