Native AmericansAfter Native Americans were given the right to build casinos on their reservations in 1988, about 220 of 562 federally recognized tribes have gaming operations. And they’re using their newfound fortune to invest in land for housing, businesses, farming, hunting and fishing grounds. The Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Indian Reservations in northeast Oregon spent $20 million to acquire roughly 30,000 acres, about a third of which they are returning to its natural conditions

Hillary ready for VP

Barack ObamaSenator Hillary Clinton said today she’d consider being the vice presidential candidate on a Democratic ticket. Barack Obama has effectively clinched the Democratic presidential nomination today. He won at least 5 more delegates  than the needed 2 118 delegates. The United States presidential election of 2008 is scheduled for November 4, 2008 to elect America’s 44th president.

36 million Americans live in poverty

There are 36 million Americans live in poverty - earning less than $20,650 for a family of four. More than 12 million American children grow up in impoverished homes. Compared to 20 other wealthy nation on measures of health, safety and relative poverty, America’s children fare amongst the worst.

Armed force recruiters asked to leave by City of Berkeley

goaway.pngThe City Council has voted to tell the Marines their downtown recruiting station is not welcome and “if recruiters choose to stay, they do so as uninvited and unwelcome guests.”. Lawmakers in Washington fired back this week, threatening to take back more than $2 million of federal funding to the city.
