Atheist countries are, in fact more peaceful. A blogger proved this statistically from the data obtained from the 2009 Global Peace Index. Which is put together by assessing 23 criteria, including foreign wars, internal conflicts, respect for human rights, the number of murders, the number of people in jail, the arms trade, and degrees of democracy. Peaceful countries have more atheists and fewer regular worshippers. The difference is highly statistically significant (P=0.001 or less) - in other words it’s real, not just a chance finding. The American Religious Identification Survey has released numbers for 2008. According to the survey, fifteen percent of respondents said they had no religion, an increase from 14.2 percent in 2001 and 8.2 percent in 1990. 55% of those who are married had no religious ceremony. 66% say they do not expect to have a religious funeral. The 5th-century BCE Greek philosopher Diagoras is known as the “first atheist”, and strongly criticized religion and mysticism.
