Study Predicts Market Dominance for Electric Cars by 2030

Toyota Tops Quality Study

Toyota PriusTHE initial quality of vehicles has continued to improve, according to the 2009 Initial Quality Study by J. D. Power & Associates that was released last week. In fact, it improved 8 percent when compared with 2008, with Toyota models topping this year‚Äôs study. The study, which grades automakers on the number of problems per 100 vehicles, found that the industry average for all vehicles was 108 problems per 100 vehicles, down from 118 in 2008. Detroit gains some ground in auto quality

Power and Associates’ closely watched annual study of vehicle quality found Monday that Ford, General Motors and Chrysler made strides last year but still lag behind their foreign competitors. The survey measures mechanical and design problems that show up in the first 90 days of ownership. Israel declares “revolution” against gas guzzlers

Prius Plugin Hybrid Israel declared a “green tax revolution” on Monday, proposing a new customs levy on large vehicles and a rebate for junking older gas-guzzling models. Israeli Finance Minister Yuval Steinitz said he hoped his plan would persuade Israelis to switch to hybrid cars while earning the state up to 400 million shekels ($100 million) a year. GM Files Bankruptcy to Spin Off More Competitive Firm

gm-auto makerGeneral Motors Corp., the world‚Äôs largest car maker until its 77-year reign ended last year, filed for bankruptcy protection in the U.S. with a plan to create a 21st-century company that can compete in world markets. GM reported $82.29 billion in assets and $172.81 billion in debt. The U.S. government will bankroll the transformation of the 100-year-old automaker, a victim of tumbling sales and higher gas prices. The U.S. plans to convert much of its $50 billion of loans to a 60 percent stake in the new entity, administration officials said. China to Impose Stricter Gas Mileage Rules Than U.S

Obama to unveil big increase in required mpg

speedo-meterNew cars and trucks will have to get 30 percent better mileage starting in 2016 under an Obama administration move to curb emissions tied to smog and global warming. While the 30 percent increase would be an average for both cars and light trucks, the percentage increase in cars would be much greater, rising from the current 27.5 mpg standard to 42 mpg starting in 2016. Terrafugia Inc.’s “roadable aircraft,” named Transition, completed its first flight at Plattsburgh, N.Y., on Wednesday, the company said. Daimler to get $2.7 billion Abu Dhabi investment

Toyota iQToyota said,the recalls are mostly due to problems linked to the seatbelt tensioner that may cause a fire in the case of a collision. 1.35 million Vitz and two other models will be recalled globally. Subject to the recall in Japan are 525,898 Vitz, Belta and Ractis cars built from January 2005 to April 2008 and combined 830,000 units of the Vitz subcompact and Belta exported to Europe, North America and other markets.
