Opera has released an early version of a browser-based sharing and collaboration service called Unite, which has been criticized by some security experts as having a level of protection that is too low. Opera Unite, an application platform that turns the user’s PC into a web server, was unveiled in an alpha version by the Norwegian company on Tuesday. Mozilla is readying a program that will allow companies to build their own customized browsers based on the next version of Firefox, which will be out in a few weeks. The Build Your Own Browser program is a good fit for enterprises that want to create a customized browser that can be easily installed across multiple corporate desktops, said Mike Beltzner, director of Firefox at Mozilla Corp. Through the program, which will start sometime soon after Firefox 3.5 is released at the end of June, companies can use a Web application provided by Mozilla to specify certain customizations for the browser — such as bookmarks to certain sites or corporate intranets or portals, he said. According to The Wall Street Journal, the EU is considering forcing Windows users to choose a browser to download and install before they can first browse the Internet. The EU is looking into more sanctions against the software giant for including Internet Explorer with Windows, according to WSJ’s sources, and will likely announce a final ruling in the next few weeks. An EU spokesperson said that if the regulator rules against Microsoft, any remedy “would be based on the fundamental principle of unbiased choice” while a Microsoft spokesman says the company is “committed” to “full compliance” with EU law. Google’s Chrome browser got faster Thursday with the release of Chrome 2.0.172.28. The new Chrome 2 is mainly about speed. It runs JavaScript-heavy Web pages about 30% faster than the last stable version of Chrome, according to Google. Beyond its speediness, the new Chrome 2 includes embarrassment mitigation (an improved New Tab page that allows the ability to remove thumbnails of visited sites), a title bar-concealment option for full-screen presentations, and form autofill. Microsoft says EU regulators will hand Google more dominance of the Internet search business if they go ahead with planned regulations on Microsoft’s Windows operating system, the Financial Times reported. By bundling Internet Explorer with Windows, Microsoft shielded its browser from competition with rival products, harming innovation and reducing customer choice, the EU regulators had said. Browser makers Mozilla and Opera accused Microsoft yesterday of force feeding Internet Explorer 8 (IE8) to users with Windows Update and silently changing the default browser on PCs. Both companies, which make Firefox and Opera, respectively, are involved in the European Union’s antitrust action against Microsoft, which was accused in January of “shielding” IE from competition by bundling the browser with Windows. Since the beginning of the year, Mozilla’s Firefox has picked up more than half of the users IE lost; the other half went to Apple’s Safari and Google’s Chrome. Globlly the market share of Internet Explorer was 66.82%, the lowest level for IE in about a decade. Apple today announced the public beta of Safari® 4 web browser. Apple claims that the Nitro engine in Safari 4 runs JavaScript 4.2 times faster than Safari 3. According to Apple the technology which the Safari 4 is built on executes JavaScript up to 30 times faster than Microsoft’s Internet Explorer 7. Google released its browser Chrome last year.
Every month more and more visitors ditching Microsoft’s Internet Explorer,in favor of other web browsers FireFox,Safari and Google’s Chrome. In December 68.15 percent of Web surfers used Internet Explorer, down from 69.77 percent in November and 71.27 percent in October, while Firefox’s share rose to 21.34 percent, from 20.78 percent in November and 19.97 percent in October, while Safari’s climbed to 7.93 percent, from 7.13 percent in November and 6.57 percent in October.
Security experts warned computer users not to use Microsoft’s Internet Explorer until a security flaw in the browser is fixed. The security flow in the browser could be exploited by criminals to take control of computers and steal passwords. Microsoft says it has detected attacks against IE 7.0 but said the “vulnerability” was present in all versions of the browser. Internet Explorer is used by around 70% of the internet users. Google is set to launch a new Web browser called Chrome on Tuesday. The beta version of Google Chrome will be launched tomorrow in more than 100 countries. Google said they have used components from Apple’s WebKit and Mozilla’s Firefox to build the new browser. Google promises simplicity, speed and security in its new browser. Mozilla has declared victory after its Firefox 3 downloads exceeding its initial goal of 5 million downloads. The servers logged over 8 million downloads during the 24-hour download day. At their busiest the servers were handling more than 9,000 downloads per minute. Until yesterday, Firefox had been downloaded more than 10 million times.
