Anti-capitalist protesters stormed a branch of the Royal Bank of Scotland today as police struggled to keep a lid on increasingly violent G20 demonstrations in the City of London. The RBS received billions of pounds of taxpayer funds last year to prevent its collapse but has been widely criticised for awarding its former chief executive, Sir Fred Goodwin, a £700,000 pension for life at the age of 50. Reverend Billy and his gospel choir encourage consumers to abandon the products of large corporations and mass media; and preaches a broader message of economic justice, environmental protection, and anti-militarism, protesting sweatshops and the Iraq War.
Wal-Mart, the world’s largest retailer, is being accused of violating federal election laws by urging its employees into voting against Barack Obama. Store and Department Mangers are asked to attend mandatory meetings where they are told that a vote for Democrat Barack Obama would be a vote for unions. The AFL-CIO and three other labor-rights groups have asked the Federal Election Commission to investigate whether Wal-Mart Stores Inc. unlawfully pressured employees to vote against Democrats. Wal-Mart,employs 1.4 million workers. It has rigorously resisted being unionized and opposes the bill. Last month, the Wall Street Journal first revealed the details of this accusation. Barack Obama supports a bill in Congress that proponents say would make it easier for workers to organize.
