Mathematicians take aim at ‘phantom’ traffic jams


Countless hours are lost in traffic jams every year. Most frustrating of all are those jams with no apparent cause — no accident, no stalled vehicle, no lanes closed for construction. Such phantom jams can form when there is a heavy volume of cars on the road. In that high density of traffic, small disturbances (a driver hitting the brake too hard, or getting too close to another car) can quickly become amplified into a full-blown, self-sustaining traffic jam. A team of MIT mathematicians has developed a model that describes how and under what conditions such jams form, which could help road designers minimize the odds of their formation. GM Files Bankruptcy to Spin Off More Competitive Firm

gm-auto makerGeneral Motors Corp., the world’s largest car maker until its 77-year reign ended last year, filed for bankruptcy protection in the U.S. with a plan to create a 21st-century company that can compete in world markets. GM reported $82.29 billion in assets and $172.81 billion in debt. The U.S. government will bankroll the transformation of the 100-year-old automaker, a victim of tumbling sales and higher gas prices. The U.S. plans to convert much of its $50 billion of loans to a 60 percent stake in the new entity, administration officials said. Plugin HybridThe new plug-in hybrid F3DM made by Chinese auto maker BYD is now on sale in China for 149,800 yuan ($21,200). BYD boasts the car can travel up to 100 km with a fully charged battery. The car can be plugged into any 220 volt wall outlet. The company also announced that it plans to begin exporting the F3DM to the U.S. in 2010. A plug-in hybrid is a hybrid car with batteries that can be recharged by connecting a plug to an electric power source.

World’s Smallest Car : Toyota iQ

Toyota iQToyota unveiled Toyota iQ at the Frankfurt Motor show. Toyota is promoting the iQ as the ultimate refined mode of transportation. Despite its small size Toyota iQ received a 5-star safety rating in Euro NCAP testing. According to Toyota the 1.0-liter gasoline iQ should record 54.1 mpg on the European driving cycle (99g/km of CO2). iQ will go on sale in Japan in October and few months later in Europe. The price is expected to be in the range of $13,000 - $15,000.

Hybrid Combined With Solar Power

hybridPrius is the high-end models of Toyota hybrid cars, and it is planned to add solar-powered air conditioning to make it more fuel efficient. This new feature is part of the third-generation Prius, and it will be launched next year. The solar panels will be used to provide the air conditioning system. There has been some doubts about the amount of electricity that can be obtained by solar panels. According to Kentaro Endo, a specialist on renewable energy from Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, laying solar panels out on the roof only gives energy that can only be used to power 2 hairdryers.

Toyota Yaris : Green Car of the year

YarisEnvironmental Transport Association (ETA), which is currently running the 2008 Green Transport Week in the UK, has named the Yaris the 2008 Green Car of the Year. Power, emissions, fuel efficiency and the amount of noise are looked at to choose the Green car from 1,300 vehicles. Dodge SRT-10 sports car came in dead last. Yaris is getting 34 mpg in the city and 40 mpg on the highway. On another story, sales of another Toyota hybrid model Prius recently topped 1 million.

The new technology would use EDGE to connect to the Internet. A safety feature that BMW installed would only enable Internet connection when the car is parked.
