Chavez allies back ousted Zelaya

hondurasLeft-wing Latin American leaders have declared their support for Honduran President Manuel Zelaya, who was ousted in an army coup on Sunday. In Honduras protesters defied an overnight curfew, holding a rally in the capital, Tegucigalpa. The curfew was imposed by interim President Roberto Micheletti just hours after he had been sworn in. Chavez Moves to Take Over Oil Service Companies in Venezuela

Chavez calls Obama “ignoramus”

chavez_hugoVenezuelan President Hugo Chavez has called U.S. President Barack Obama an ignoramus for saying the socialist leader exported terrorism and obstructed progress in Latin America. “He goes and accuses me of exporting terrorism: the least I can say is that he’s a poor ignoramus; he should read and study a little to understand reality,” said Chavez, who heads a group of left-wing Latin American leaders opposed to the U.S. influence in the region.

Chavez orders expropriation of U.S. rice plant

Hugo ChavezPresident Hugo Chavez ordered the expropriation of a rice-processing plant in Venezuela owned by American food giant Cargill Inc. on Wednesday because the company allegedly was not distributing rice at prices imposed by the government. Venezuelan government said Cargill’s plant in Portuguesa state violated local laws by distributing rice without printing the regulated price on its packages. Ch?°vez was sworn in as president of Venezuela on February 2, 1999. Among his first acts was halting planned privatizations of, the national social security system, aluminum industry holdings, and the oil sector.

U.S. to expell Venezuelan envoy

Hugo ChavezIn the latest move in an escalating diplomatic battle between the United States and Venezuela,the United States is expelling the Venezuelan ambassador, Bernardo Alvarez Herrera. The U.S. decision comes a day after Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez announced that he was expelling the U.S. ambassador to Venezuela. Chavez told a crowd of supporters. “When there’s a new government in the United States, we’ll send an ambassador. A government that respects Latin America.” Hugo Chavez is the elected president of Venezuela who has instituted sweeping reforms since taking office. He has shunned U.S. and European support and focused on South American and Third World solidarity. In 2004, a US backed coup against him foiled when large crowd of demonstrators and a palace guard contingent joined hands in favor of him. Tensions between the US and Venezuela had already risen after Russia sent two strategic bombers to Venezuela for military exercises.
