Google OS May Force Microsoft to Reinvent Windows

Cyber attackers target South Korea and US

Microsoft backtracks, extends XP availability to 2011

windows-xpJust hours after a noted research analyst criticized Microsoft’s plans to limit sales of Windows XP PCs, the company said it would extend the aged operating system’s lifespan in the post-Windows 7 world to as late as April 2011. Microsoft also slipped in a reminder about XP’s limited lifespan in its e-mailed announcement. “Windows XP is currently in the extended support phase and Microsoft encourages customers to migrate to either Windows Vista or Windows 7 as soon as possible,” the spokeswoman said yesterday. US Army Upgrading PCs to Vista

us-armyUS Army is migrating all of its Windows-based computers to Microsoft’s Vista operating system to bolster Internet security and standardize its information systems. The systems change, which includes swapping Office 2003 for Office 2007, is set to be completed by Dec. 31. About half of the Army’s 744,000 desktop computers have already installed Office 2007, estimated Dr. Army Harding, director of Enterprise Information Technology Services for the Army’s G-6. ‘Sleep talking’ PCs save energy and money

French police: we saved millions of euros by adopting Ubuntu

ubuntuFrance’s Gendarmerie Nationale, the country’s national police force, says it has saved millions of dollars by migrating its desktop software infrastructure away from Microsoft Windows and replacing it with the Ubuntu Linux distribution. Linux has also been adopted by several other government agencies in France. The French National Assembly runs Ubuntu on over 1,000 workstations and the Ministry of Agriculture uses Mandriva Linux. Ubuntu is a free and open source computer operating system based on Debian GNU/Linux. Microsoft Pitches Surface to New Markets

microsoft surfaceMicrosoft gave a demo of health-care applications designed for the Surface tabletop computer to Oprah Winfrey’s production company. Microsoft Surface, is a multi-touch computer which is developed as a software and hardware combination technology that allows a user, or multiple users, to manipulate digital content by the use of natural motions, hand gestures, or physical objects. It has a 360-degree user interface and a 30-inch reflective surface. In one demonstration, a normal paint brush was used to create a digital painting in the computer. The price tag for a Surface is US$12,000.

Cyber robots to patrol government networks

MatrixThe Oak Ridge National Laboratory has created software that uses colonies of borg-like cyberrobots it says will help government agencies detect and fend off attacks on the nation’s computer network infrastructure. Mac’s Market Share Continues to Grow

Mac BookMac’s user base is growing in a rapid phase,thanks to iPod’s popularity. More and more personal users and small business community are moving to Apple’s Mac computers from Windows PC. Analysts believe Mac’s growing popularity is partly due to a “halo effect,” created by Apple’s iPod. Apple had a 10.4 home market share at the end of the first quarter of this year, compared to 7.5 percent for the first quarter of 2007, and 5.4 percent for the first quarter of 2006. DellJune 30 was the last day you could get Windows XP. Because of compatibility issues, uncertainty about Vista stability/ease of use, and hardware requirements there are many people who don’t want to go for Vista. If you are ready to pay up to $50 to downgrade to XP,Dell is ready to sell computers with Windows XP. This may well be the first time an older operating system is being sold as a bonus package. The World Health May Benefit From A Computer Game

Foldit is the first protein-folding project which capitalizes on people’s natural 3-D problem-solving skills. Researchers are trying to use the brain power of people all around the world to advance biomedical research and asking volunteers to participate in this study. Researchers are unsure about the result.
