Mozilla is readying a program that will allow companies to build their own customized browsers based on the next version of Firefox, which will be out in a few weeks. The Build Your Own Browser program is a good fit for enterprises that want to create a customized browser that can be easily installed across multiple corporate desktops, said Mike Beltzner, director of Firefox at Mozilla Corp. Through the program, which will start sometime soon after Firefox 3.5 is released at the end of June, companies can use a Web application provided by Mozilla to specify certain customizations for the browser — such as bookmarks to certain sites or corporate intranets or portals, he said. Browser makers Mozilla and Opera accused Microsoft yesterday of force feeding Internet Explorer 8 (IE8) to users with Windows Update and silently changing the default browser on PCs. Both companies, which make Firefox and Opera, respectively, are involved in the European Union’s antitrust action against Microsoft, which was accused in January of “shielding” IE from competition by bundling the browser with Windows. Since the beginning of the year, Mozilla’s Firefox has picked up more than half of the users IE lost; the other half went to Apple’s Safari and Google’s Chrome. Globlly the market share of Internet Explorer was 66.82%, the lowest level for IE in about a decade. Security experts warned computer users not to use Microsoft’s Internet Explorer until a security flaw in the browser is fixed. The security flow in the browser could be exploited by criminals to take control of computers and steal passwords. Microsoft says it has detected attacks against IE 7.0 but said the “vulnerability” was present in all versions of the browser. Internet Explorer is used by around 70% of the internet users. Mozilla has declared victory after its Firefox 3 downloads exceeding its initial goal of 5 million downloads. The servers logged over 8 million downloads during the 24-hour download day. At their busiest the servers were handling more than 9,000 downloads per minute. Until yesterday, Firefox had been downloaded more than 10 million times.
