Gay rights activists in India say a ruling by the Delhi High Court decriminalising homosexuality in the country is a landmark. The judgement overturns a 148-year-old colonial law which described a same-sex relationship as an “unnatural offence”. Homosexual acts were punishable by a 10-year prison sentence. Is homosexuality natural? Scientists say that the same-sex attraction is common in many species. Two male penguins at New York’s Central Park Zoo were a couple for 6 years. These penguins nurtured a fertilized egg together given by a zoo keeper.
There are more than 1,500 animal species are known to practice same sex coupling. This includes owls, salmons, bears, gorillas, flamingos and many others. So why evolution hasn’t eliminated this trait since it doesn’t lead to reproduction. The answer is that this type of coupling may simply be for pleasure. Not every sexual act lead to reproduction.
