Gmail users can now automatically translate messages they receive into 41 languages, Google announced Tuesday. The new feature is available to individual Gmail users, as well as to people who use it as part of the Apps collaboration and communication suite for organizations. Gmail has added a new feature to insert inline images when composing emails. Now you can insert inline images into the body of the mail without having to use the attachment option. Enable the new “inserting images” in Labs under Settings, and Gmail users will have the option of using the new images toolbar icon.
For the past two weeks, the market share of US Internet visits to Gmail has been higher than visits to YouTube, according to Hitwise. Previously, YouTube consistently ranked 10th among all websites by market share of visits until the week ending Jan. 10, 2009, where Gmail moved up one rank to reach #10. Google launched Gmail on April 1, 2004 as an invitation-only beta release and it became available to the general public on February 7, 2007. Gmail’s spam filtering features a community-driven system: when any user marks an email as spam, this provides information to help the system identify similar future messages for all Gmail users.
Google has apologised for yesterday‚Äôs major Gmail meltdown after some of its data centres in Europe failed to cope with a routine maintenance event. Google’s Gmail service was unavailable starting around 10:30 AM GMT on Tuesday. Google acknowledged the problem and said it was working to restore service. The scope of the outage was not immediately clear, but at least some users in Europe and Asia could not get access to their inboxes or had to wait a minute or more for them to open. Google launched Gmail voice and video chat, making it easier for people around the world to chat in high-quality video for free right within Gmail. To get started, open a Gmail chat window, click on the “Options” menu at the bottom, and choose “Add voice/video chat,” which will walk you through a one-time installation of a free plugin (a quick 2 MB download). When you re-open Gmail you’ll notice your “Options” link in your chat window has changed to “Video & more”. Open this menu and click “Start video chat” to see and hear your partner in high-quality video. You can pop out the video and change its size and position, or switch to full screen.
