2008 Nobel Prize for Medicine goes to AIDS pioneers and Cancer researcher

Alfred NobelLuc Montagnier, and Francoise Barre-Sinoussi won half the prize of 10 million Swedish crowns (£800,000) for discovering HIV virus. Harald zur Hausen shared the other half of the prize for the discovery of “human papilloma viruses causing cervical cancer.” Medicine is traditionally the first of the Nobel prizes awarded each year. Since 1901, the Nobel Prize has been honoring men and women from all corners of the globe for outstanding achievements in physics, chemistry, medicine, literature, and for work in peace. The foundations for the prize were laid in 1895 when Alfred Nobel wrote his last will, leaving much of his wealth he earned from his dynamite business to the establishment of the Nobel Prize.

Recovery From Heroin

heroinA study compared the effectiveness of naltrexone (a standard treatment for heroin addiction), buprenorphine and placebo in treating drug addiction. The U.S researchers proved that Buprenorphine helps heroin addicts to stay clean for more number of days compared to other treatments. According to the study, buprenorphine performed best in maintenance of heroin abstinence, prevention of relapse, and reduction of HIV risk behavior of patients.

HIV vaccine could be possible

HIVResearchers from the University of Montreal, McGill University Health Centre and BD BioSciences of San Diego have made a breakthrough discovery in the fight against HIV infection. The research found that the protein FOX03a not only can limit the deterioration of certain disease-fighting immune cells, but could help with the development of an HIV vaccine. HIV is characterized by the deterioration of T-cells.
