Internet hurts family time, study says

familydinnertableA new study has found the time per week that families interact as a group has fallen by nearly a third between 2005 and 2008. In a new survey from the Center for the Digital Future, researchers found that in 2008, 28% of people said that being wired has resulted in them spending less time with family members, a threefold increase from the 11% reported just two years ago, in 2006. Internet TVs, Other Video Devices To More Than Quadruple By 2013

Yahoo Internet TVWorldwide shipments of consumer-electronics devices capable of supporting Internet video are projected to rise by nearly a factor of five from 2009 to 2013, according to research firm iSuppli. The firm forecast that 376.5 million devices supporting Internet video will be shipped annually by 2013, up from 80.5 million in 2008. Craigslist Sued For Promoting Prostitution

A complaint filed against Craigslist by the sheriff of Cook County, Ill, says that while the site does not profit directly from prostitution, the popularity of its erotic services ads is the reason Craigslist is the ninth-most-popular Web site in the country and the reason the site can charge up to $75 for job ads. The sheriff is seeking an injunction to prevent further erotic services ads from being posted on the site, and reimbursement for the more than $100,000 in costs incurred policing prostitution-related crime over the past year. Craiglist is a free online classified advertising service.

ToysRUs pays $5m for toys domain

Toy retailer ToysRUs has paid $5.1m (£3.6m) for the Toys.com domain name. The domain had previously been up for auction and went to a company called Faculty Lounge for $1.25m. In 2007 $14m is paid for the domain sex.com. Although the current domain market is nowhere as strong as it was during the dot-com heyday, it remains strong and is currently experiencing solid growth again. Full Story : BBC.com

Facebook targets Twitter with latest makeover

TwitterFacebook is changing its homepage design once again. The recent change will have a Twitter like feature added to it. In the new design users will be able to sign up for constant update from public profile pages. The increasingly popular Twitter is a social networking and micro-blogging service that allows its users to send and read other users’ updates (known as tweets), which are text-based posts of up to 140 characters in length.

SaveOurNet.ca co-founder Steve Anderson had this to say today, “If traffic growth is slowing, then it is hard to imagine why the ISPs need to suddenly selectively throttle Internet traffic. Doodle for Google competition

Doodle for googleToday, Google announced this year’s U.S. “Doodle 4 Google”. The competition invites all K-12 students in the U.S. to design a Google logo inspired by the timely theme, “What I wish for the world”. The winning student’s doodle will be displayed on the Google homepage on May 21, 2009. The champion “doodler” will also receive a $15,000 college scholarship and a $25,000 technology grant for his/her school. This year’s competition also includes a $10,000 award to recognize the school district with the greatest quality participation.

Google’s MLab, fights for Net Neutrality

google mlabMany ISPs (Internet Service Providers) have a practice of  blocking  or restricting certain kind of internet traffic for their users. There are many groups fighting for what they called network neutrality. Network neutrality is the principle that Internet users should be in control of what content they view and what applications they use on the Internet. Google is a strong advocate for network neutrality, and as part of its efforts towards network neutrality, it released a open source tool MLab. If you want to know if your ISP blocks or throttles applications you are running, you can diagnose it using this tool.
