Pakistanis fleeing the Swat Valley say the army shelled their villages, killing civilians in its offensive this week against Taliban militants. Hawaii’s state Senate overwhelmingly approved a bill Wednesday to celebrate “Islam Day” — over the objections of a few lawmakers who said they didn’t want to honor a religion connected to Sept. 11, 2001. The resolution to proclaim Sept. 24, 2009, as Islam Day passed the Senate on a 22-3 vote. It had previously passed the House. The bill seeks to recognize “the rich religious, scientific, cultural and artistic contributions” that Islam and the Islamic world have made. An eight-year-old girl from Saudi Arabia has been granted a divorce from her 50-year-old husband. The girl’s marriage was arranged by her father and backed twice by a judge on the condition that it was not consummated until she reached puberty. A Michigan Muslim organization said Thursday it has asked U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder to investigate complaints alleging the FBI is asking followers of the faith to spy on Islamic leaders and congregations. According to the organisation, most common complaints have come from people with pending immigration issues being approached by agents to monitor mosques in exchange for help in resolving their citizenship cases. Pakistani troops and paramilitaries overpowered a group of militants who took over the police training academy in Lahore and killed at least 20 people during a seven-hour siege today. Pakistani officials say it is too early to say who is responsible for Monday’s assault in Lahore. The Lahore academy has been named by local media as the Manawan police training school. Iran’s supreme leader has dismissed overtures from the US president, saying Tehran does not see any change in US policy under Barack Obama’s administration. A Muslim woman was asked to leave her place in line at a credit union in Southern Maryland and be served in a back room because the head scarf she wore for religious reasons violated the institution’s “no hats, hoods or sunglasses” policy, the woman said yesterday. Taliban militants Saturday shot down a suspected drone aircraft in a Pakistani tribal area bordering Afghanistan, officials said. Residents and a local police official said two drones were flying low over a village in the South Waziristan tribal district when one of them was hit by militant fire.
