64% of Americans Say Media Overplayed Michael Jackson Story

michael-jacksonNearly two in three Americans said news organizations gave too much coverage to the sudden death of Michael Jackson in the days following his June 25 heart attack in Los Angeles, according to the Pew Research Center for the People & the Press. While 64 percent deemed media attention to the 50-year-old pop superstar excessive, 29 percent thought it was appropriate and only 3 percent thought there was not enough coverage. Political Blogs More Credible than Newspapers, Say Those Who Read Both

newspaperAccording to research by a Brigham Young University political scientist, people who closely follow both political blogs and traditional news media tend to believe the content on blogs is more accurate. Professor Richard Davis reports this and other blog-related insights in Typing Politics, a new book published by Oxford University Press. Davis studied daily blog readers from a nationally representative sample and found that just 3 percent got most of their news from blogs. Most readers still got their information from traditional news organizations, despite some bloggers’ predictions that they would entirely replace traditional media. Twitter blocked in China

China surpass US in internet usage.The Great Firewall of China has grown again. Forty-eight hours ahead of the most sensitive date on the Chinese calendar, a host of popular websites, including photo-sharing site Flickr.com, search engines Livesearch.com and Bing.com (Microsoft’s answer to Google), as well as Hotmail, are all suddenly inaccessible, in addition to Twitter.com. Iranians and Others Outwit Net Censors

censored-webThe Iranian government, more than almost any other, censors what citizens can read online, using elaborate technology to block millions of Web sites offering news, commentary, videos, music and, until recently, Facebook and YouTube. Now, more than 400,000 Iranians were surfing the uncensored Web, using the software which was created by Chinese computer experts volunteering for the Falun Gong, a spiritual movement that has beem suppressed by the Chinese government since 1999. YouTube banned in Pakistan.

You TubePakistan has blocked access to the popular YouTube website because of content deemed offensive to Islam. Danish cartoons depicting the Prophet Muhammad which outraged many is featured in Youtube. The website would remain blocked till further orders. Other countries that have temporarily blocked access to YouTube include Turkey and Thailand. Thailand lifted the band later after the video which insulting King had been removed from the site.
