North Korea may this month test a missile designed to fly as far as U.S. territory and may also be gearing up for skirmishes with the South around their disputed sea border, South Korean news reports said on Monday. Last week, North Korea conducted a nuclear test that put it closer to having a working atomic bomb, test-fired a barrage of short-range missiles and threatened to attack the South, raising tension to one of its highest levels since the 1950-53 Korean War. After years of conjecture, details have begun to emerge of a “kill weapon” developed by the Chinese to target and destroy U.S. aircraft carriers. Anti-ship ballistic missile (ASBM) Dong Feng 21 can strike carriers and other U.S. vessels at a range of 2000km. If operational as is believed, the system marks the first time a ballistic missile has been successfully developed to attack vessels at sea. The US and Japan yesterday deployed anti-missile batteries on land and sea to shoot down possible debris from an intercontinental ballistic missile North Korea is expected to test in the next few days. Japan today threatened to shoot down a satellite that North Korea plans to launch early next month if it shows any signs of striking its territory. Iran has test-fired a new air-to-surface missile, Iranian media reported on Sunday. The air-to-surface missile, weighing 500kg, can hit and destroy maritime targets up to 110 kilometers in distance. Israel and Washington accuse Tehran of trying to develop nuclear bombs. Iran says its nuclear programme is a peaceful drive to generate electricity.

As tensions rising with Nato, Russia shows its might by test fired a a long-range ’stealth’ missile, Topol RS-12M. With a range of 9,500 Kms, Topol puts Europe and much of the US within its reach. The missile can carry one 550-kiloton nuclear warhead. Col Alexander Vovk of the Russian Strategic Rocket Forces said: “The launch was specially tasked to test the missile’s capability to avoid ground-based detection systems.” Earlier,Vladimir Putin, said that Moscow was working on new types of nuclear weapons to boost the country’s defense against the threat of the US shield.
Iran warned the United States and Israel it was ready to retaliate for any attack on their country,following the test fire of nine long range missiles. Iranian officials have said the missiles could reach targets 2,000 km away. Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has insisted his country had no intention of attacking Israel. Crude Oil prise rose $2 to around $138 a barrel. Iran is the world’s fourth largest oil producer. The French, German and Italian governments expressed concern at the missile tests.
