Bangladesh is growing.
South Asian nation Bangladesh’s land mass is growing with a rate of 20 Square Kilometers per year. With this rate of landmass growth the country will have additional 1000 Square Kilometers of land by 2060. The growth is caused by the deposit of sediments washed down by Ganges, Brahmaputra and numerous other rivers. But ironically this landmass may be swallowed up by the increasing sea levels caused by climate change. There are more than 20 countries in the world that have area less than 1000 Square Kilometers.
Solar Eclipse,August 1 2008
The eclipse will start around 8:30 a.m.(GMT) tomorrow in the eastern part of the arc, leading to totality in just under an hour. The eclipse will be visible from a narrow corridor through northern Canada, middle of Russia, western Mongolia and China. A solar eclipse occurs when the Moon passes between the Sun and the Earth so that the Sun is fully or partially obscured. Total solar eclipses are rare events. Although they occur somewhere on Earth every 18 months on average. The last full solar eclipse took place almost a year ago on March 29, 2007. Next Total Solar Eclipse will occur on 22nd July, 2009.
Vertical farm in NY
New York magazine asked four architects to come up with ideas for the plot at Canal and Varick Streets, in New York city. Work AC came up with building a farm in the lot; a vertical farm. Work AC’s co-principal Dan Wood said “We are interested in urban farming and the notion of trying to make our cities more sustainable by cutting the miles [food travels]. Underneath the farm there will be a farmers market, selling what grows above.

National Geographic’s Human Footprint’
National Geographic Channel’s latest documentary “Human Footprint“, shows how our wanton consumerism is choking the planet. Over the two-hour broadcast, the consumption of a lifetime is piled up and put on display. Earth Hour Tomorrow
Created to take a stand against the greatest threat our planet has ever faced, Earth Hour uses the simple action of turning off the lights for one hour to deliver a powerful message about the need for action on global warming. Millions of people in some of the world’s major capital cities, including Copenhagen, Toronto, Chicago, Melbourne, Brisbane and Tel Aviv will turn off the lights at 8pm March 29, 2008 for Earth Hour.
Tar Sands - Most destructive
A report by Environmental Defence calling the Alberta Oil Sands, the most destructive project on Earth. Some facts:
- Oil sands mining is licensed to use twice the amount of fresh water that the entire city of Calgary uses in a year.
- At least 90% of the fresh water used in the oil sands ends up intailing ponds.
- Processing the oil sands uses enough natural gas in a day to heat 3 million homes.
- The toxic tailing ponds are considered one of the largest human-made structures in the world. The ponds can be seen from space.
- Producing a barrel of oil from the oil sands produces three times more greenhouse gas emissions than a barrel of conventional oil.
Greenest Vehicles of 2008
American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy (ACEEE) chose Honda Civic GX as the greenest vehicle of the year. Civic GX won the title for fifth consecutive year. Natural gas-powered Civic GX ranked first with the gasoline Civic, Fit and Civic Hybrid joining the list of the 12 most environmentally-conscious vehicles available to the public. This is the eighth year in a row that a Honda vehicle received the number one ranking.
