Google’s Chrome OS won’t be an immediate threat to Windows, but it may force Microsoft to reinvent its operating system more quickly into a product that takes full advantage of the Web and can move more nimbly across devices and form factors, analysts said. Microsoft is unlikely to have been surprised by Google’s announcement late Tuesday that it is working on a new OS for people who “spend most of their time on the Web,” as Google described it. Just hours after a noted research analyst criticized Microsoft’s plans to limit sales of Windows XP PCs, the company said it would extend the aged operating system’s lifespan in the post-Windows 7 world to as late as April 2011. Microsoft also slipped in a reminder about XP’s limited lifespan in its e-mailed announcement. “Windows XP is currently in the extended support phase and Microsoft encourages customers to migrate to either Windows Vista or Windows 7 as soon as possible,” the spokeswoman said yesterday. Windows Vista Service Pack 2 is now available for download. The Vista SP2 update includes new support for recording Blu-ray discs straight from the Vista OS, updated support for Bluetooth v2.1, and bug fixes that address slow shutdowns and mysterious crashes. You can download Vista SP2 directly from Microsoft at its Web site (348MB) or it will be automatically delivered to your Vista system via Windows Update within a few weeks, according to Microsoft. France’s Gendarmerie Nationale, the country’s national police force, says it has saved millions of dollars by migrating its desktop software infrastructure away from Microsoft Windows and replacing it with the Ubuntu Linux distribution. Linux has also been adopted by several other government agencies in France. The French National Assembly runs Ubuntu on over 1,000 workstations and the Ministry of Agriculture uses Mandriva Linux. Ubuntu is a free and open source computer operating system based on Debian GNU/Linux. Russia is planning to develop a new national operating system, according to CNews. The Russian plan will base its efforts on Linux and expects a worldwide impact. The Chinese government successfully lowered its Microsoft licensing costs through an early investment in a national Linux distribution.
Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer has announced a free public beta of the new OS, at the 2009 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. Microsoft says Windows 7 only requires 1 GB memory. Its notable that Vista has the same memory requirement but runs extremely slow on systems with 1GB of RAM.
Mac’s user base is growing in a rapid phase,thanks to iPod’s popularity. More and more personal users and small business community are moving to Apple’s Mac computers from Windows PC. Analysts believe Mac’s growing popularity is partly due to a “halo effect,” created by Apple’s iPod. Apple had a 10.4 home market share at the end of the first quarter of this year, compared to 7.5 percent for the first quarter of 2007, and 5.4 percent for the first quarter of 2006. Performance and metrics researcher Devil Mountain Software reports that its survey of over 3,000 Vista PCs revealed nearly 35 percent to be running XP. That means one in three PCs with Vista is downgraded to XP. PC makers have been selling Vista license but actually shipping them with XP installed. Customers want XP so vendors are using the loop holes to provide it. But the survey I’m looking for is..how many people chose Mac because of Vista?
