The Obama administration plans to seek as much as $3 billion over the next five years to train and equip Pakistan’s military, and is considering sending 10,000 more troops to battle the Taliban in Afghanistan, defense officials said Wednesday. Pakistani troops and paramilitaries overpowered a group of militants who took over the police training academy in Lahore and killed at least 20 people during a seven-hour siege today. Pakistani officials say it is too early to say who is responsible for Monday’s assault in Lahore. The Lahore academy has been named by local media as the Manawan police training school. Taliban militants Saturday shot down a suspected drone aircraft in a Pakistani tribal area bordering Afghanistan, officials said. Residents and a local police official said two drones were flying low over a village in the South Waziristan tribal district when one of them was hit by militant fire. Taliban fighters in Pakistan have said they will review a 10-day truce in Pakistan’s Swat valley when it runs out next week, disputing a government claim that a permanent ceasefire had been agreed. Swat is a North-West Frontier Province of Pakistan located 160 km/100 miles from Islamabad. In December 2008 most of the area was captured by the Taliban.
NATO warned Tuesday that Pakistan risked creating a safe haven for Islamist extremists after it struck a deal to impose Islamic law and suspend a military offensive in the former tourist haven of Swat. Taliban governed Afghanistan from 1996 until 2001, until it was removed from power by Northern Alliance and NATO forces. An archaeological site dating back about 5,500 years and believed to be older than Mohenjodaro has been found in Sindh province. Mohenjo Daro, or “Mound of the Dead” is an ancient Indus Valley Civilization city that flourished between 2600 and 1900 BCE. It was one of the first world and ancient Indian cities. The site was discovered in the 1920s and lies in Pakistan’s Sindh province. It was the most developed and advanced city in South Asia, and perhaps the world, during its peak.
