The electric-utility industry is planning a pilot initiative to see whether Chinese spies have infiltrated computer networks running the power grid, according to people familiar with the effort. Officials of the North American Electric Reliability Corp., an industry regulatory group, are negotiating with a defense contractor for the job of searching for breaches by cyberspies, according to people familiar with the plans. NERC is completing plans for the pilot program as it launches a separate, broader initiative to evaluate power companies’ ability to withstand cyber attacks. The pilot program for Google’s foray into smart grid and energy management infrastructure will be available to select customers at a group of eleven utilities that have installed—or are in the process of installing—smart meters. With the move, Google will be making the company’s first significant play in energy-use data, an entirely new dimension of consumer data for the company. By having real-time information about home energy usage on a desktop (running as a Google Gadget), those using the meter will be able to use their energy more efficiently. According to a newly released draft of a report by the Renewable Energy Policy Network for the 21st Century (REN21), Spain now leads the world in added photovoltaic capacity. Spain added 1.7 million kilowatts of capacity in 2008, followed by Germany at 1.5 million kilowatts. The United States lagged behind in a distant third place at 300,000 kilowatts. An Alaska ethics report has concluded that Republican Vice Presidential candidate, Sarah Palin, abused her power as governor when firing a state official. Alaska governor was accused of pressuring the official to fire her former brother-in-law and then firing the official when he refused. Investigator Stephen Branchflower, found Palin in violation of a state ethics law that prohibits public officials from using their office for personal gain.
RateMyCop.com allow allows users to post comments about police they’ve interacted with, and rate them, the stores the names and, in some cases, badge numbers of over 140,000 cops in as many as 500 police departments. The site was launched on February 28th. Without any notification hosting company GoDaddy took the site down. RateMyCop.com founder Sesto says he’s already arranged hosting elsewhere, and hopes to have the site online Tuesday night.
