A Drug That Could Give You Perfect Visual Memory

Imagine if you could look at something once and remember it forever. You would never have to ask for directions again. Now a group of scientists has isolated a protein that mega-boosts your ability to remember what you see. A group of Spanish researchers reported today in Science that they may have stumbled upon a substance that could become the ultimate memory-enhancer. The group was studying a poorly-understood region of the visual cortex. They found that if they boosted production of a protein called RGS-14 (pictured) in that area of the visual cortex in mice, it dramatically affected the animals’ ability to remember objects they had seen. Vitamins Slow Eye Degeneration in Senior Citizens

eyesA specific combination of vitamins and other nutrients may significantly slow down the rate of sight loss in Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD), a major cause of blindness in the elderly, according to new research conducted at Queen`s University, Belfast, Northern Ireland. The research team discovered that supplements containing Vitamin C and E, the mineral zinc, as well as lutein and zeaxanthin (carotenoids found in yellow fruits and dark green leafy vegetables respectively), given to 400 senior citizens, could not only slow degeneration but could also lead to improved sight and sharper vision. Sleep Helps Us Let Go Of Negative Emotions

sleeping-monkeyAccording to new research presented last week at the annual meeting of the Associated Professional Sleep Societies in Seattle, adequate sleep may underpin our ability to understand complex emotions properly in waking life. According to the research, participants who had reached REM sleep (when dreaming most frequently occurs) during their nap were better able to identify expressions of positive emotions like happiness in other people, compared with participants who did not achieve REM sleep or did not nap at all. Can Gene Mutations Generate Immortality? Harvard Research Team Says “Yes”

Scientists are working on mutations to generate immortality. Early experiments have greatly extended the lifespan of bioengineered worms, enhancing their genetic integrity and giving them resistance to many things that would normally kill them. Harvard medical school staff have engaged in (Elegans) immortality research based on a simple observation: certain cell lines are immortal. Full Story : DailyGalaxy.com…

Human Brains Make Their Own ‘Marijuana’

MarijuanaU.S. and Brazilian scientists have discovered that the brain manufactures proteins that act like marijuana at specific receptors in the brain itself. This discovery may lead to new marijuana-like drugs for managing pain, stimulating appetite, and preventing marijuana abuse. The extracted proteins were then compared with another peptide previously known to bind to, but not activate, the receptor (THC) affected by marijuana. Full Story : ScienceDaily.com….

Fatty foods — not empty stomach — fire up hunger hormone

BurgerNew research led by the University of Cincinnati (UC) suggests that the hunger hormone ghrelin is activated by fats from the foods we eat — not those made in the body — in order to optimize nutrient metabolism and promote the storage of body fat. The findings, the study’s author says, turn the current model about ghrelin on its head and point to a novel stomach enzyme (GOAT) responsible for the ghrelin activation process that could be targeted in future treatments for metabolic diseases. Fluoride Linked to Bone Cancer

water-tapBlood fluoride levels were significantly higher in patients with osteosarcoma than in control groups, according to research published in Biological Trace Element Research (April 2009). Osteosarcoma, a rare bone cancer, occurs mostly in children and young adults. Sandhu and colleagues measured serum fluoride levels in three equal groups of age-matched and sex-matched patients. “Mean serum fluoride concentration was found to be significantly higher in patients with osteosarcoma as compared to the other two groups,” write Sandhu’s team. Water fluoridation is the controlled addition of fluoride to a public water supply to reduce tooth decay. Full Story : Pitchengine.com….

Cruel and inhuman treatment causes more mental damage than physical torture

torture-is-wrongNew research findings published today by Dr Metin Başoğlu, Head of Section of Trauma Studies at King’s College London and the Istanbul Centre for Behaviour Research and Therapy, examines the psychological impact of war captivity, ‘cruel, inhuman, and degrading treatment’ (CIDT) and physical torture. Findings revealed that being held captive in a hostile and life-threatening environment, deprivation of basic needs, sexual torture, psychological manipulations, humiliation, exposure to extreme temperatures, isolation, and forced stress positions appear to cause more psychological damage than physical torture. Words have different tastes say scientists

wordsWords can evoke thoughts of different colours, sizes, shapes and even tastes scientists have claimed. Researchers say that on hearing a word, we all assign it different characteristics producing a jumble of simultaneous sensations. It had previously been thought that only 1 percent of the population had synaesthesia - a condition which makes people see shapes and colours when reading words. Full Story : Newslite.tv……

UK public making ‘mountain of technology waste’

electronic-wasteAccording to research conducted for Dell on the recycling habits of 5,000 consumers across the UK (1,000 respondents), France, Germany, Italy, and Spain, Germans are proving the savviest (80 per cent regularly recycle electronics). Consumer confusion around the recycling options available for old electronics has led to 50 per cent of UK consumers failing to correctly recycle old technology. How ever, the level of UK consumers who claim to regularly recycle paper, plastics, and glass, is higher than the European average. Full Story : Theiet.org….

Is Aging an Accident of Evolution?

genePrevailing theory of aging challenged by Stanford University Medical School researchers. Their discovery contradicts the prevailing theory that aging is a buildup of tissue damage similar to rust. The Stanford findings suggest specific genetic instructions drive the process. If they are right, science might one day find ways of switching the signals off and halting or even reversing aging. Full Story : DailyGalaxy.com….

UCSD Researchers make first direct observations of Biological particles in high-altitude ice Clouds

cloudsA team of UC San Diego-led atmospheric chemistry researchers moved closer to what is considered the “holy grail” of climate change science when it made the first-ever direct detection of biological particles within ice clouds. Analysis of the ice crystals revealed that they were made up almost entirely of either dust or biological particles such as bacteria, fungal spores and plant material. SKorean experts claim to have cloned glowing dogs

The four dogs, all named “Ruppy” - a combination of the words “ruby” and “puppy” - look like typical beagles by daylight. But they glow red under ultraviolet light, and the dogs’ nails and abdomens, which have thin skins, look red even to the naked eye. Full Story : Physorg.com……

‘Sleep talking’ PCs save energy and money

pc-sleep-keyboardPersonal computers may soon save large amounts of energy by “sleep talking.” Computer scientists at UC San Diego and Microsoft Research have created a plug-and-play hardware prototype for personal computers that induces a new energy saving state known as “sleep talking.” Normally PCs can be in either awake mode where they save substantial power but are essentially inactive and unresponsive to network traffic. Cold-Activated Brown Fat May Lead to New Obesity Treatments

snow-manBrown adipose tissue (called brown fat) helps babies, young children, and other small mammals stay warm by burning calories when activated by low temperatures. Scientists have been skeptical that adults retain significant amounts of brown fat on their bodies. But the new research shows that many of us—perhaps even most—do. The maximum amount of extra energy that people with relatively large brown fat deposits can burn probably tops out at about 500 calories. Full Story : Health.com…..

Twitter can make you immoral, claim scientists

twitterSocial networks such as Twitter may blunt people’s sense of morality, claim brain scientists. New evidence shows the digital torrent of information from networking sites could have long-term damaging effects on the emotional development of young people’s brains. A study suggests rapid-fire news updates and instant social interaction are too fast for the ‘moral compass’ of the brain to process. Full Story : Dailymail.co.uk….
