A South Korean navy warship warned Somali pirates away from a North Korean freighter Monday by threatening to open fire, the South Korean military said. The pirate ship gave up chasing the North Korean vessel and sped away shortly after snipers aboard the helicopter prepared to fire warning shots at it, the statement said. Full Story : YahooNews…….

Pirates opened fired as a small U.S. Navy team approached the enclosed lifeboat on which an American was being held hostage in waters off the coast of Somalia. A Defense Department official told CBS News that the Navy team was in a rubber craft headed toward the lifeboat holding the kidnapped captain of the Maersk Alabama when Somali pirates fired at or in the general direction of the Navy boat. The US captain taken hostage by Somali pirates managed to jump off their lifeboat overnight but was recaptured, according to US media reports. There are thought to be four pirates with Capt Phillips in the lifeboat, which has reportedly run out of fuel. The Maersk Alabama was the sixth ship hijacked off Somalia in the past week. Somali pirates who hijacked Ukrainian arms ship MV Faina have vowed to fight any rescue attempts. They demanded a $20 million ransom to release it. There are 33 Soviet-designed tanks and heavy weapons aboard the ship. Six U.S. Navy warships have surrounded the ship. Pirates Spokesman Sugule Ali told the Associated Press: ‘We have nothing to do with insurgents or terrorist organizations, we only need money.’
