Nokia is the number one mobile phone brand according to 112,000 teenagers, across 30 markets, who took part in the Global Habbo Youth Survey Brand Update 2009 (GHYS). Despite a third consecutive year at the top of the chart, Nokia has lost teen support year-on-year. In 2009, 21 per cent of teens named Nokia the number one favorite, compared to 29 per cent in 2008. Google and Sony are expected to announce a non-exclusive digital books partnership today, a move that goes directly at Amazon and its new Kindle reader. With the Sony reader, there are still titles available for purchase online. But the Google catalog boosts Sony’s offerings by adding the more than 500,000 public domain books scanned by Google as part of its controversial book digitization project. Those titles will be made available for free. The move, announced today, dwarfs the roughly 245,000 closed-format titles currently available for the much-hyped Amazon Kindle.
One more gadget with the touch screen capability is in the market. PRS-700 is the third model of the Sony’s ebook reader which has a built-in light and a touch-sensitive display. The device also comes with a stylus, which can be used to highlight text or make handwritten notes. The reader will go on sale at the end of the month for about $400. A single battery charge offers up to 7,500 pages of reading. Sony’s introduction of touch screen capability set it apart from the competing Kindle reader by Amazon.
OLED, Organic Light Emitting Diode. A new type of viewing screen. Can be viewed in bright lighting conditions, at greater angles, unlike LCD’s. It uses an organic material that emits its own light, so no back light is neede. Sony has unveiled a prototype OLED (organic light emitting diode) television at the Ceatec 2008 electronics expo in Japan. The TV measures just 0.9mm.
Sony Ericsson today announced the launch of PlayNow™ plus, which will offer users download, play and recommend unlimited amounts of music wherever they are and whenever they like. The service, PlayNow plus, will first be offered in Sweden with a global launch to follow next year, according to Sony Ericsson. The music service will cost 99 Swedish kronor (US$15) per month. Wireless operator Telenor will offer the service with a W902 Walkman phone for 2 year contract.
Sony and Toshiba laptops scored highest in a poll to find which home computers are the most reliable. The two brands got 93 per cent reliability in the “Which?” Computing annual survey. Overall, laptops scored 87 per cent for reliability, compared with 80 per cent for desktop computers. Apple, Compaq and Dell chosen as the top desktop brands.
Sony is recalling thousands of its VAIO laptops, due to an issue that can cause overheating. According to the U.S. Consumer Products Safety Commission,the recall is for about 74 000 laptops in US. Sony said on its website that “the issue involves a small number of units which may overheat due to a wiring problem”. Sony is offering users free inspection and, if necessary, repair of their VAIO notebook. The company asks customers to visit Sony’s product support Web site to see if their laptop is included in the recall.
Sony unveiled a LCD High Definition TV with a 9.9 mm thickness, taking the crown as the world’s thinnest LCD HDTV. The model has a LED back lighting, 3,000:1 contrast ratio, 120Hz MotionFlow tech, x.v.color and BRAVIA Engine 2 image processing. It will be released in Japan on November 10th. Price? $4,500.
