Twitter, known for celebrity gossip, drunken messages and nonstandard English, is now also home to Queen Elizabeth II. The British monarchy started what it called a “Royal Twitter” account that will be run by the Web teams at royal residences Buckingham Palace and Clarence House, according to its Web site today. By 12:10 p.m. New York time, the Twitter account had more than 2,000 followers. The internet suffered a number of slowdowns as people the world over rushed to verify accounts of Michael Jackson’s death. Search giant Google confirmed to the BBC that when the news first broke it feared it was under attack. Millions of people who Googled the star’s name were greeted with an error page rather than a list of results. Twitter plans to generate its first revenue this year from companies such as Dell Inc., Whole Foods Market Inc. and Starbucks Corp., which use the micro- messaging site to communicate with millions of customers. Record labels looking for customers should focus their efforts on the Twitter faithful, according to new data from NPD Group. About 33 percent of Twitter users have purchased a physical CD and 34 percent have bought a digital download in the last three months, the report said. About 23 percent of non-Twitter users bought a CD and 16 percent purchased digital downloads. Twitter launched the first phase of its Verified Accounts program moments ago, meaning that celebrities, musicians, athletes, actors, public officials and public agencies on the service can now display a “verified account” button on their Twitter pages. The feature has been a long time coming, and many celebrities will jump on the opportunity to prove their legitimacy. Micro-blogging service Twitter remains the preserve of a few, despite the hype surrounding it, according to research. Just 10% of Twitter users generate more than 90% of the content, a Harvard study of 300,000 users found. Estimates suggest it now has more than 10 million users and is growing faster than any other social network. However, the Harvard team found that more than half of all people using Twitter update their page less than once every 74 days. Recent figures from research firm Nielsen Online show that visitors to the site increased by 1,382%, from 475,000 to seven million, between February 2008 and February 2009. According to market tracker Hitwise, traffic to Twitter went up 43% in a before and after survey of the Oprah Effect. Additionally, on April 17th, the day of Winfrey’s first Tweets, 37% of visits to Twitter.com were new visitors, Hitwise says.
