A defiant North Korea on Saturday vowed to build more nuclear bombs and to start enriching uranium for a new weapons programme after the UN Security Council imposed sanctions over last month’s nuclear test. The United States will boycott a United Nations conference on racism next week, the U.S. State Department said on Saturday, citing objectionable language in the meeting’s draft declaration. UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon urged the world’s rich nations to spend $72 billion a year to help Africa to fight poverty, improve health and ensure universal primary education. He pointed out the estimated $267 billion spent last year on agricultural subsidies by the world’s richest nations. In 2006, 34 of the 50 nations on the UN list of least developed countries are in Africa.
Russia formally recognizes the independence of South Ossetia and Abkhazia. Leaders of Abkhazia and South Ossetia, which have had de facto independence since the early 1990s, thanked Russia. The US state department had said that recognition of the two provinces’ independence would be “a violation of Georgian territorial integrity” and “inconsistent with international law”. Russian president Medvedev called on all other countries to follow suit.‚ÄúThat was a no easy choice to make, but it is the sole chance of saving people‚Äôs lives,‚Äù he said. US and western European countries recognized Kosovo’s independence early this year amid strong protection from Russia. There are 192 member countries in United Nations, even though Kosovo and Vatican City are recognized as independent countries they are not members of UN.
