Unionized Quebec Wal-Mart workers get 1st contract

walmartIt took nearly four years, but unionized workers at a Quebec Wal-Mart store now have their first collective agreement, a first in North America. The new agreement includes a $0.30 per hour wage increase on a yearly basis, for the next two years, for current employees. Walmart Worker Died in Black Friday Stampede

WalmartA Wal-Mart worker died early Friday after an “out-of-control” mob of frenzied shoppers smashed through the Long Island store’s front doors and trampled him. Even officers who arrived to perform CPR on the trampled worker were stepped on by shoppers. About 2,000 people had gathered outside the store as it prepared to open.

Walmart Advocating Against Obama?

WalmartWal-Mart, the world’s largest retailer, is being accused of violating federal election laws by urging its employees into voting against Barack Obama. Store and Department Mangers are asked to attend mandatory meetings where they are told that a vote for Democrat Barack Obama would be a vote for unions. The AFL-CIO and three other labor-rights groups have asked the Federal Election Commission to investigate whether Wal-Mart Stores Inc. unlawfully pressured employees to vote against Democrats. Wal-Mart,employs 1.4 million workers. It has rigorously resisted being unionized and opposes the bill. Last month, the Wall Street Journal first revealed the details of this accusation. Barack Obama supports a bill in Congress that proponents say would make it easier for workers to organize.

Walmart Sales slowing down.

WalmartWalmart world’s largest retailer said its sales growth is slowing down in US. However the retailer sees growth in its international stores in Latin America, the UK and China. Walmart is expanding its overseas presence aggressively. It has 330 stores in Brazil and planning to invest $1.1 bn next year to open 80 more. Wal-Mart has been subject to criticism by various groups and individuals. WalMart has also faced accusations involving poor working conditions of its employees. If considered as an individual economy Walmart is the 8th largest trading partner of China ahead of Russia, Australia and Canada.
