Google CEO Eric Schmidt has insisted that YouTube will eventually become a ‘profitable and successful’ business, despite suggestions that it will lose hundreds of millions of dollars this year. Google bought YouTube for $1.65 billion (c£1bn) in October 2006, after the site rose to prominence as one of the most popular sites in the world and the leading provider of video. Google took the wraps off a partnership with Hollywood studios bringing movies and TV shows to U.S. consumers via its YouTube video network. Some of the big-named partners inking a deal with YouTube are Sony, CBS, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, BBC, and independent film studio Lions Gate Entertainment. YouTube and Universal to launch premium music site

Google’s YouTube and Universal Music Group, the world’s largest music company, said they will launch a premium music video website. Visits to Gmail surpass YouTube

For the past two weeks, the market share of US Internet visits to Gmail has been higher than visits to YouTube, according to Hitwise. Previously, YouTube consistently ranked 10th among all websites by market share of visits until the week ending Jan. 10, 2009, where Gmail moved up one rank to reach #10. Google launched Gmail on April 1, 2004 as an invitation-only beta release and it became available to the general public on February 7, 2007. Gmail’s spam filtering features a community-driven system: when any user marks an email as spam, this provides information to help the system identify similar future messages for all Gmail users.
YouTube blocks UK users from watching music videos

Google Inc. said Monday it will block U.K. users from watching music videos on its popular video-sharing site YouTube after negotiations with Britain’s music royalty-collecting body broke down. It was not clear how long the music videos would stay blocked. Full Story : AP…..

You Tube for Television, as it called let users to watch and share YouTube videos on any TV screen. YouTube which is owned by Google has to turn over every record of every video watched by YouTube users to ViaCom,a judge ruled. Google was sued by ViaCom in March 2007, for allowing users to upload clips of Viacom’s copyright material. Viacom is a media conglomerate with various worldwide interests in cable/satellite television networks (MTV Networks and BET), video gaming (Sega of America), and movie production and distribution.

China has blocked access to YouTube in order to stop the spread of video footage related to the riots going on in several cities in Tibet. The Chinese government has not commented on its move to prevent access to YouTube.

Pakistan has blocked access to the popular YouTube website because of content deemed offensive to Islam. Danish cartoons depicting the Prophet Muhammad which outraged many is featured in Youtube. The website would remain blocked till further orders. Other countries that have temporarily blocked access to YouTube include Turkey and Thailand. Thailand lifted the band later after the video which insulting King had been removed from the site.
